Roots Reggae and serious Dub comp from a top label. Definitely an emphasis on killer dub productions, with just a handful of vocal numbers. Everything is really good, but most of the dub tracks are really quite similar, esp. 12-20.
No FCCs detected, I love 7 and 11; 1, 8 and 10 also great.
1. ***very slow roots skank, serious messaging and chanting from the toastmaster.
2. **downtempo very dubby skank, bits of vocals, but mostly drum and bass with bits of instruments.
3. **roots and a bit stoned sounding bubble, Rasta lyrics by a fine singer.
4. **downtempo deep dub instrumental.
5. *very slow organ-based skank – appears to be an instrumental version of “Norwegian Wood”.
6. **midtempo, bouncy dub, bits of vocals. (“Ites” here means red – he’s singing about the colors of the Ethiopian flag, adopted by Rastas.)
7. ****downtempo slinky skank, gorgeous vocals by Mr. Isaacs. Includes a dub with some great percussion sounds. Smoke up!
8. ***midtempo dub with cool syncopation – all you need is a riddim section.
9. **avalanche intro, then midtempo organ-based skank, lyrics about a big stone mashing down the heathen.
10. ***funky midtempo dub skank, just right for nicing up de dance.
11. ****downtempo skank with fine syncopation, raw vocal chanting reminiscent of Burning Spear. Includes the “version” – this and a sack of potatoes are all you need to survive.
12. **midtempo dub, I think this was a hit by the Congos, includes bits of nice harmonies, but mostly just a nice thick dub.
13. **very slow intro, then midtempo dub skank with bits of original vocals from “Row Fisherman Row” (we have an entire double CD of this riddim).
14. **downtempo ultra-dub.
15. **downtempo dub of Cherry-O Baby riddim, with bits of sweet vocals.
16. **midtempo syncopated ultra-dub.
17. **midtempo ultra-dub with bits of melodica.
18. **more ultra dub – these are all very similar, but all great dub.
19. **more ultra dub – a bit uptempo, with bits of falsetto vocals.
20. **guess what? More ultra dub – uptempo, nice percussion.
