JAMES CARTER: Present Tense
EmArcy, 2008
MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Versatile craftsmanship always been James Carter’s thing, and he really shows it off here, playing five different instruments and working a wide range of bop-based territory, from cool slides to funky jams. He even slips in a touch of free-jazz on #2. It’s a fine straightahead effort with great support from DD Jackson on piano.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 6, 7, 8 … maybe 2, 10
1. 7:32 – happy bop groove: trumpet struts, piano staggers, bari sax honks
2. 7:15 – off-kilter bop becomes dreamy ballad, ends in wild abandon
3. 5:09 – relaxed and sunny soprano sax ballad, warm bass & piano solos
4. 6:06 – tango-inflected contemporary jazz: soulful sax & acoustic guitar
5. 5:12 – exotic atmospheric intro, then a funky strut w/overdubbed sax duet
6. 6:06 – cool classic breeze with flute & muted trumpet; nicely done
7. 8:32 – gorgeous little-known tune with a suspended desert-exotica vibe
8. 4:27 – straight up bop burner, impressive baritone sax wizardry
9. 4:46 – light bossa nova/samba breeze; upbeat tenor sax & guitar solos
10. 8:12 – standard ballad, impeccable with muted trumpet & soft sax
