JUNK BOX: Cloudy Then Sunny
Libra, 2008
AVANT-GARDE – Tense, noisy trio music, led by Japanese pianist Satoko Fujii. The performances are essentially improvised, but follow compositions written by Fujii the way a ship might follow a compass bearing. The music is clever and unpredictable, ranging from calm contemplation to downright scary, but maintaining an organic flow.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8
1. 2:13 – skittery & chattering like an overheard phone call, freaks out
2. 6:47 – quiet noises, then ominous, paranoid surge; ends panting and spent
3. 4:52 – piano & trumpet chat over tiny bird squeaks, blooms & scatters
4. 2:24 – abrasive trumpet, martial percussion, stormy piano
5. 4:11 – quiet perc rises; then trumpet simulates machine guns & screaming!
6. 6:57 – slow trumpet & quiet perc; galumphs around for a bit, then falls back
7. 5:17 – harsh trumpet over stormy piano & pattering perc; jazzy middle
8. 5:39 – suggests running feet, watery drips; hypnotic piano & trumpet blats
9. 6:26 – military drums in a blasted landscape, then moody avant ballad
10. 6:57 – brash intro, settles down; stern solo piano; electronic buzzing
11. 4:21 – chaotic scene drifts out to near-silence, calm meditation
