A deep post-bop band with almost too much of the John Coltrane/McCoy Tyner "classic quartet" sound. Led by sax and piano, of course, with a couple of surprises (sitar on tracks 3,7). Decent overall but feels derivative; some buzzy guitar here and there helps elevate it. The few quiet segments left me flat. Basically a '60s nostalgia session with some twists, like the free-jazz intensity of #5, or the 17-minute raga of #7.
- A coolly rolling late-Coltrane vibe, after a sneaky evil bassline start
- Coltrane II. Strong, propulsive, with percussion for a "world" touch. Gets downright furious.
- Quiet sitar & sax start. Then finally: brisk & breezy contempo-jazz that includes a nifty sitar solo. Really gets cooking.
- Chiming guitar plucking, turns into a fast loungy piece that eventually gets screaming. Abrupt ending.
- Big and swirling. Gets pretty wild and out-there.
- Heavy, crashing-ocean feel, dark.
- Sitar+sax raga. Slow thoughtful, incense-laden. Long.
