UTON & VALERIO COSI - "Kaarmeenkaantopiiri" CD (Fire Museum)
Droning, mellow, instrumental free psychedelic music. It's not rock but still psych. Experimental drone that sounds improvised. Instrumentation is hard to discern. Organs? Keyboards? Flutes? Sax? Environmental sounds for sure with free jazz at its core but not really in sound. This is a duo between Finland's UTON and Italy's VALERIO COSI.
**1. Long track that has different sections separated by near silence. The initial building drone, which goes for the first 4:45 is wonderful. Then there is near silence and the next section quietly shows up. This section has environmental sound mixed with distant sax(?) or cello(?). The track never gets very loud after the first section.
**2. Starts with quiet machinery type sounds and a keyboard or sax. Horns with a drone and probably the most jazz-like track.
3. Starts quiet with some sort of string instrument improv.
4. Another long track and another quiet beginning. Quiet but squirrely improv. Almost too quiet to play for the first 8:15. Then tribal percussion, noises and a sax show up in a jam.
Good stuff. -mph
