ELIO VILLAFRANCA: The Source In Between
Ceiba Tree, 2008
MODERN JAZZ – Solid quartet set from Cuban pianist Villafranca, who is underexposed but highly respected within the scene. The disc maintains a serious vibe, with most tracks sharing a low, brooding intensity, but it’s also nimble and engaging (especially in #1).
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 7, 10
1. 5:59 – speedy Latin-bop groove: piano spins gleefully, sax heats up
2. 6:05 – cool-toned ballad: soft, thoughtful piano & bright, lyrical sax
3. 11:33 – deep postbop, ‘70s feel: heavy intro, searching theme, exotic bass break leads into hip piano & soaring sax over dead-serious groove
4. 4:18 – quirky modern-bebop ditty, rolls along with a dark undertone
5. 5:07 – pretty ballad: intro like a chilly breeze, then serene
6. 6:55 – modernist stroll: chugging rhythm, curlicues from sax & piano
7. 7:16 – sober bass intro, piano explores broad spaces over a tense groove
8. 4:22 – more tension, balanced with airy sax and breezy piano solos
9. 4:33 – somewhat mysterious ballad with soprano sax & hand percussion
10. 6:02 – remix of track 1, adds some extra percussion
