Experimental, sincere, general acoustic pop. Karl Blau is a prolific act and this collection of songs illustrates that you can still produce quality with great quantity. His vocals can sound almost like Beck at times, and his influences seem to range from Waits to rock n’ roll. The lo-fi production really works with his style and the songs are malleable enough to work on the record, yet remain their own entities. The songs all sound familiar to the ear, but have their own, interesting spin on the norm. This is folk in a loose sense of natural feel, but is clearly not folk in execution. The album seems so genuinely warm, loose, and interesting. Highly recommended. No FCC violations noted.
1. Electronic experimentation with guitars, Waits-esque percussion (1:51)
2. Galloping drums frame, poppy guitar song(3:26)
*3. Sounds like a doo wop 50s song structure, electronic organ is present, guitar solo duels with vocals during bridge (4:10)
4. Guitar wanderings frame simple percussion, and forthright vocals (2:55)
5. Piano driven, guest vocalist, fuzzy bass (3:12)
6. Sounds like a haunted boardwalk, guitars are prominent, searing (1:45)
*7. Another poppy tune with gentle strumming and glockenspiel, rhythmic choruses (4:25)
8. Piano, loungey intro, echo-y effect on the vocals, ‘Love don’t own nobody,’ organs add to the quirky piano lines (2:59)
9. Electronic noodling frames the more traditional core of the song, piano-based (4:19)
10. Low tempo, melancholy number with prominent vocals, a little bluesy, melodic, minimalistic, yet subtle piece (3:22)
*11. Relaxed pop construction, driven by simple rhythm section, organ, lush guitars and piano riffs, bursts into simple but effective solo (7:04)
12. Eerie, walking synth parts contrast against smooth vocals, subtle instrumentation, and complex, yet simple drumming patterns (2:47)
