Album Review

Poppy, melodic folksy stuff. This is sort of a supergroup of folk musicians? (Read the insert.) Electronic beats underneath acoustic instrumentation, some field recordings, and neo-psych influence. Male, female, and choral vocals are overdubbed, over-tracked, and at the forefront of these recordings. This is a warm, accessible album of dreamy pop, based off of a folk foundation. The record’s production is quite full, considering it was recorded in an apartment of one of the members. Relentlessly poppy stuff, this album is a little too melodic and straightforward for indie kids, (they won’t admit they like it) but if you like tuneful folk or vocal pop, this is right up your alley. FCC violations on 3, and maybe 8? My favorites are 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, but watch out for 3 unless you are in safe harbor.

*1. Bobby rhythm, lots of doubled, layered vocals, simplistic folky guitar beneath the vocals, which are pretty interesting here. Both male and female lead vocals, kind of hypnotic. (4:06)
2. Sample opens, bare vocals, some strings, electronic drums, handclaps? (2:41)
*3. Swingy upbeat track with a definite twangy feel. Male lead vocals are nice; accordion? FCC: “fucks up” is sang once—shame, this one is pretty accessible. (3:18)
4. Slower…whale noises or some ambiance, dreamy, lush, cello, (3:29)
5. Percussion is clankering, slow; big overdubbed vocals, sort of a repetitive groove. (3:54)
*6. Piano, strings, melodic humming, very lush interesting sound. May be a cool sound bed. (2:25)
*7. I seem to be a sucker for this chord progression. Bittersweet, strong songwriting here with lush layering and a full sound. (4:24)
8. Simplistic acoustic guitar folk. Couldn’t tell if he said, “shit;” maybe a borderline FCC. (2:00)
9. Warm indie-folk stuff with some sort of lo-fi, weird percussion. Melodic bridge; chill song. (3:14)
**10. Whoa percussion! Instrumental funk-folk? Fantastic. Psychedelic textures and rich acoustic layers. (2:58)
*11. Really melodic, accessible, poppy rhythm, easy enough to like; heavy handed lyrics, though. (3:24)
