JAMES MOODY/HANK JONES QUARTET: Our Delight
IPO, 2008
BOP – Oh my, oh my. This meeting of masters joins 90-year old pianist Hank Jones and 83-year old tenor saxophonist James Moody for a joyous straightahead set that’s heavy on Tadd Dameron and Dizzy Gillespie tunes. No frills or experimentation here, just classic jazz.
All good. Fo’s Picks: 2, 5, 6, 7, 8
1. 5:29 – crisp, breezy swing: sax solo is upbeat and roaming; happy piano
2. 6:57 – cool-cat slide, with soul: dextrous sax, elegant piano. Nice!
3. 5:31 – light latin-bop: this arrangement feels rather uncomfortable
4. 6:50 – warm, tender swing: comfy bass solo, busy sax, sweet piano
5. 5:17 – tricky uptempo bop: undulating sax, skipping piano, nice & tasty
6. 7:34 – duet: an absolutely perfect version of “Body & Soul” … sparkling
7. 6:54 – lazy-day feel: sax is loose, piano & bass laid-back, fine drum solo
8. 6:09 – Moody on flute: bright, relaxed tune; catchy melody, easy stroll
9. 9:28 – soft ballad, lazy and romantic; very nice, but kind of sleepy
10. 5:21 – glides at cruising speed: straight-up sax & lively piano
11. 6:40 – piano/flute duet ballad: soft, sweet & soulful… easy to like
12. 5:31 – vocal by Roberta Gambarini: a tribute to James Moody
