Sounds a lot like 70s classic rock; songs are built around piano and electric guitar with a loud rhythm section. Guitar soloing is all over the place, and the vocalist sounds like some weird combination of Bono and Van Morrison. Songs are often bluesy and always mixed loudly, even the ballads. Lots and lots of religious imagery; the band calls themself "soul," and although I haven't listened intently to the lyrics, they sure sound like a Christian rock band to me. Most of the songs go over the top and remind me of Meat Loaf, but as far as I can tell the band is taking itself very seriously. The band's claim to fame is that they have opened for both Coldplay and Snow Patrol before. No FCCs detected.
Picks: 1 for classic rock, 6 for brassy 60s/70s white person soul-pop
*1- (2:52) Buzzing guitars open, bluesy, carried by piano. Second half of the song gets loud.
2- (4:39) Midtempo, sounds a bit like a ballad. Reminds me of Meat Loaf, a lot.
3- (3:20) Opens with drumming, followed by bass and screeching guitar. Backup singers/shouters sound like something out of a church service.
4- (4:08) Solo piano opens, plaintive vocals about a baby that went to bed and did not wake up.
5- (4:10) Bluesy guitar, piano, and harmonica. Pretty weepy.
*6- (2:44) Loud, brassy, upbeat, pop piece. The intro sounds like some late 60s/early 70s pop-soul song I've heard, maybe by the Jackson 5 or a similar group.
7- (3:35) Organ is present, cementing the church theme. Vocalist is trying so hard that the extent of his whines make his voice scratchy.
8- (3:23) Relies a lot on drum and bass, sporadic guitar sounds almost surfy at times.
9- (3:11) Piano intro sounds like early 70s Neil Young, vocals come in and add an adult contemporary feel shortly after that.
10- (2:41) Okay pop song, chorus is cliche but doesn't sound bad. An awful lot of soloing in the last minute.
11- (3:20) Brassy, is that a sax solo in place of the guitar solo? I get a very Christian-rock vibe from this.
12- (4:07) Quietest song on the album, acoustic with occasional strings, very heavy on the God lyrics.
13- (1:11) Repetitive interlude with echo-y vocals.
14- (4:42) Longest song on the album sums up their basic structure: slow start, loud vocals, everybody plays their instruments to create a climax around the same vocals, and there is a little guitar solo.
