A twangy Cat Power. Bosque Brown is Mara Lee Miller. Damien Jurado helped her secure a recording opportunity in Seattle around 5 years ago. This is country at its heart, but mostly spreads into folk, blues, gospel, and perhaps sadcore. Bosque Brown sounds more indie than country, though. Intimate, yet very full in production, this is direct, but not embarrassingly so. It manages to sound sincere and avoid the high-school-diary feel. Good record. Recommended for indie Americana peoples. No FCCs.
1. 10 seconds of silence before Cat Power-esque piano song. Light brushstrokes and guitars come in halfway through. (2:09)
*2. Minimalistic guitar based, drums come in, piano lead outro… melancholy track. (3:45)
3. Atmospherics, dreamy intro, kind of upbeat guitar. (4:46)
4. A capella interlude… part 1 of 3. Don’t really like it.(1:42)
*5. Dreamy again, lush, sad, pedal steel, unassuming vocals, builds nicely.(4:11)
6. A touch of Joanna Newsom, swells with rhythmic undercurrents, tinkling pianos, and backing vocals. (2:33)
7. More a capella (1:45)
8. Kind of poppy, upbeat blues with simple instrumentation of guitar, bass, piano, drums, backing vocals. (3:04)
*9. Upbeat poppy piano, great driving tune with soaring choruses. I love the way the guitar(?) sounds on this one. (5:23)
10. Last of the a capella tracks. (2:05)
*11. Cool electronics, atmospherics, bells, and piano added to another gloomy song with lovely backing vocals and commanding percussion. (4:01)
12. Simple piano chords. Effective little ballad with sweet vocals. (3:12)
13. A bit fuzzy and rich with drums and piano. Short, and recalls track 1 with the vocals. (1:26)
