Free-jazz combo of sax, cello, and drums, although it often doesn't sound like you'd expect. Cello is often processed through amps and electronics for guitar-like effects, and the drummer turns to marimba and other contraptions for a variety of sounds. Track (1) is particularly unexpected. For a more "expected" sound try (3), or maybe (7) or even (4).
Tony Malaby (sax)
Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello)
John Hollenbeck (drums, marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, melodica, and small kitchen appliances)
1- (3:34) Popping and clicking, almost a tribal/world feel.
2- (2:28) Small piece. Squeaks and machiney chirps.
3- (5:08) Sad start, into dark chugging/burrowing intensity
4- (5:31) Classical feel: Bowed cello, studious air.
5- (7:40) Goofy clatter and bird calls (modified cello?) Quiet start, turns spare and abrasive, ends rockin'.
6- (5:41) Slowish: Bowed bass, airy, warbling sax. Nice, with just a touch of seriousness, like a delicate ballet.
7- (2:17) Casual stroll, light but disjoint.
8- (9:11) Spare feel with lots of cool percussion, and pecking squeaky sax. Lots of sounds in a wild tossed salad.
9- (4:38) Easygoing, with light, high sax, like a casual scribble
10- (2:28) Like (2), small and quietly chattery.
11- (6:02) Aggressive clutter, a blurring mass with buzzy cello and some jazzy sax lines. Ends quizzical, quieter.
