A very "classical" sound -- a big, brash one at that -- from a U.S.-based Chinese composer. Three pieces: a big big symphony; a dynamic symphony with Chinese instruments added; and an acoustic guitar quartet.
- Big, stern, dramatic symphonic piece. Almost like the soundtrack to a grand old Hollywood thriller. ... After about 7 minutes, an exotic Middle Eastern theme pops up, quieter and upbeat.
-6: Symphony plus Chinese instruments
- Fast-paced, w/Chinese exotic sound and some Chinese instruments. Lots of hard slams from the orchestra. Active and colorful.
- Pecking and creeping, but still fast-paced.
- Rhythmic bursts. Happy, dramatic, insistent.
- Sadder, led by cello and a mourning vocal (or is it a reed instrument?) Calm but not exactly slow.
- Upbeat rhythmic chiming. Teasing (themes keep fading out playfully).
-10: Guitar quartet
- Mid/fast, good paced marching with odd harmonies. A little quieter towards the end, with good string twanging and wood thumping
- Quieter but still mid/fast. Low-level backing with lots of snapped notes and some string scraping. Really quiets down later.
- Stern feel, with cute tricks (springy sounds, clapping sounds).
- A quiet conclusion.
