FAT CAT BIG BAND: Angels Praying for Freedom
Smalls, 2009
MODERN JAZZ – Guitarist/composer Jade Synstelien’s 11-piece band presents appealingly quirky original material that slips neatly into the big band tradition without being retro, reverent or kitschy. The tunes all get right to the point with tight arrangements and crisp solos.
This is one of two discs released simultaneously. The other CD, Meditations on the War, is generally tighter. But this one’s good too.
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10
1. 4:24 – easy, breezy ditty: steady trombone, swinging tenor sax
2. 5:57 – relaxed tune suddenly accelerates, nifty two-sax solo in the middle
3. 4:15 – jittery bounce, snappy Basie-ish riffs: quick solos, then all-in…
4. 3:38 – strangely deadpan vocal tune, lightens up for bass trombone solo
5. 3:15 – speedy swing scramble: trumpet glides high, brisk drum solo
6. 5:30 – swaying ballad with lots of hidden complexity, soulful sax solo
7. 3:58 – snappy tune: tricky head, sneaky riffs under fluid horn solos
8. 5:32 – roots reggae meets ballroom swing (!!) … gruff duet vocals
9. 3:52 – straightforward, gliding tune with some oddball harmony
10. 3:03 – accelerates into a glorious jumble, but manages a soft landing
