DOUG COX & SALIL BHATT: Slide to Freedom 2
NorthernBlues, 2009
CANADA/INDIA – Very fine follow-up to 2007’s Slide to Freedom, a unique blend of blues and Indian classical music. Cox plays resophonic guitars, and Bhatt is the inventor of the Satvik Veena, a 19-string hybrid instrument with a guitar body and a resonating gourd. Vocalist John Boutte adds soul to 1,3,5,7,8.
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 5, 6, 8
1. 4:21 – relaxed walking groove, positive vocals, veena break goes to town
2. 9:51 – meditative intro; rolling groove starts at 3:30, a cool easygoing jam
3. 4:22 – mysterious vibe, soulful vocal, tight guitar/veena dialogue
4. 8:10 – upbeat, percolating: great percussion & shimmering string interplay
5. 5:20 – beautiful “Amazing Grace,” simple and moving, very good vocal
6. 10:17 – slow dialogue… speeds up gradually, deep playing on both sides
7. 2:58 – Beatles cover! Straight-up bluesy treatment with a jolly bounce
8. 5:32 – soul vocal trades off with strings, then an upbeat jam. So cool.
