TOM HARRELL: Prana Dance
HighNote, 2009

MODERN JAZZ – A true musician’s musician (and Stanford alum!), Harrell presents a wonderful set of no-frills original music, building on deceptively simple, even childlike riffs to make compelling statements. His trumpet is gorgeous, getting straight to the heart of the catchy yet thoughtful tunes. And he has a great quintet loaded with players who, like Harrell himself, don’t get the attention they deserve. I dig this!

Tom Harrell - trumpet, flugelhorn
Wayne Escoffery - saxophones
Danny Grissett - piano, Fender Rhodes
Ugonna Okegwo - bass
Johnathan Blake - drums

* * * * | All interesting. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 6, 8

1. 5:56 – stepping-stone theme, trumpet walks over happy groove
2. 7:28 – gently spinning in odd meters: fluid sax, bright Fender Rhodes
3. 8:24 – simple rising/falling theme, propulsive rhythm, undulating solos
4. 5:17 – happy li’l strut, like the theme song for a sunny summer day
5. 7:50 – spare melody over upbeat groove, walking/climbing horn solos
6. 6:58 – upbeat: sing-song theme provides basis for warm solo flights
7. 6:05 – cute ballad: creeps up & down the scale, easy-swinging trumpet solo
8. 8:11 – upbeat strut, with a hint of Latin jazz; bright, perky solos
