GAMELAN OF CENTRAL JAVA, Vol. X
Felmay, 2009
INDONESIA – This volume of the remarkably in-depth series includes two vocal works featuring a trio of female singers (sindhen), along with one instrumental. These pieces are best enjoyed in full, but the Eastern-scale vocals may be too much for some ears in extended stretches.
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3
1. 33:37 – Slow, soaring vocals over relaxed, undulating melodic patterns. The unison vocal line has been re-arranged to stretch out the piece and showcase the individual singers. Beautiful music, unfolds gradually, shifting and shimmering like a mirage. Full stop after 15 minutes, vocal solo, then band returns with male chorus joining the sindhen.
2. 14:06 – Instrumental: slow, with great dignity and depth; the gender metallophones carry the melody (they’re usually in the background). Meditative, hypnotic and gorgeous.
3. 12:17 – Bright, shining, with some off-balance shifts in harmony and several surprising tempo changes. Plenty of vocal interplay between the sindhen trio/individuals and the male chorus. Quite intriguing.
