CHRISTIAN McBRIDE & INSIDE STRAIGHT: Kind of Brown
Mack Ave., 2009
MODERN BOP – The master bassist gets back to fundamentals, debuting his first acoustic working band in some time. This clean, catchy mainstream disc barely hints at the power and flexibility of the quintet’s live shows, but it will do. Happy jazz, played at a high level. Warren Wolf really stands out on vibes, and McBride is impeccable.
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 9, 10
1. 4:54 – sunny, catchy theme: polite round of solos, easy to like
2. 7:52 – hot bop workout: bass intro, happy theme, sparkling solos from all
3. 6:31 – upbeat stroll, snappy groove with a retro feel and a touch of soul
4. 6:38 – relaxed midtempo, ballad feel but with a spark; sweet solos
5. 6:35 – lazy groove, nicely bluesy with cool sax & vibes solos
6. 7:50 – straightforward swinging midtempo, solos add firmness
7. 6:07 – midtempo, tricky rhythms but warm sound, piano sets the pace
8. 5:27 – easygoing, nostalgic ballad; memories of happy days
9. 8:07 – brisk tempo, stabbing theme, solos glide, drummer gets some
10. 4:19 – romantic standard ballad: soft and low, bowed bass/piano duet
