RYAN MEAGHER: Atroefy
Fresh Sound/New Talent, 2009
MODERN JAZZ / INSTRUMENTAL ROCK – Guitarist Meagher (pronounced “Marr”) brings an uncompromising indie-rock spirit to his debut recording, with catchy hooks and grooves from electric bass & drums balanced by moody, individualistic guitar solos and sweeping saxophone flights. Solid; might fit equally well in jazz or indie shows.
Ryan Meagher - guitar
Loren Stillman - alto sax
Matt Renzi - tenor sax, clarinet
Geoff Kraly - bass
Vinnie Sperrazza - drums
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6
1. 7:33 – drum/bass drive the groove; dramatic pauses & punches; nice saxes
2. 6:31 – warm but enigmatic, cruises casually over tricky time signatures
3. 6:01 – strong indie-rock vibe: gently chugging, then a firm stomp, gets loud
4. 8:22 – slouching, moody: drags wearily, rises and slumps, then guitar burns
5. 4:26 – relaxed, warm, a bit wistful with unison horns, brightens in the middle
6. 7:01 – very much a “song,” meandering but lyrical, with prominent drums
7. 4:48 – simple stomp, almost a sing-song melody and a steady beat
