Chamber jazz with an angular, gnarled sense of swing. At once upbeat and cerebral -- geometric jazz? A good modern sound with viola, clarinet, and piano. It reminds me of the work Steve Lehman has done, but less steely and futuristic. Good sense of drama in the composing. Try track 4 (first half) for something immediately ear-grabbing.
1- Slow, careful. Fragile clarinet and piano over metallic scrapes. Very abstract intro.
2- A nice tumult of piano, with viola/sax pickings as a melody. Cool bass solo. Second half contemplative, but opens up into a fast/serious piano-led phase
3- Stiffly swinging. Lyrical violin gives way to a sax babble with stern piano chords. Good energy, with some nice drama later (cool morse-code piano chord)
4- Catchy, digging riff on bass clarinet. Mid/fast.
5- (17:26) Starts quiet, ends loud and abstractly grooving. VERY quiet opening, a warm midnight tiptoeing into a mid/fast chamber-jazz feel. A sharp-tongued viola interlude. Then some sparse but forceful clarinet-led work that winds up to a slowly stormy, crashing piano-backed theme that's a good dramatic coda.
6- Slow. Some nicely stone-hard rhythms in the themes
Later, clarinet and viola wander
7- Lingering gloom, thick and kind of pretty
