Balkan Beat Box – Nu Made (Remixes)
Reviewed by Sadie O., 8/28/09
The usual mashup of Gypsy brass and modern/world beats we’ve come to expect from Balkan Beat Box – but remixed. Mostly dance grooves, with strong beats and influences from all over. I think it’s less Gypsy brass/Balkan than the original tracks, but it’s lots and lots and lots of fun. Play! Enjoy! Eat!
No FCCs detected. Everything is INSANELY GREAT.
1. 5:17 ****dramatic trumpet, Arabic female singing, cheers; after 50 seconds doumbek and electronic club thump beat. Irresistible noise. Female hip hop vocals in Arabic.
2. 3:32 ***downtempo funky dance thump with kinda wobbly horns. Sheer fun. Male dancehall vocals in English, kinda.
3. 5:23 ***bub bub bub! Bits of the original, but… different. Prominent slinky bassline.
4. 5:15 ****frogs on crack. Yay! And slide whistles, too! My cup runneth over!
5. 5:01 ***rooster and midtempo funky shuffle with bits of Reggae and Klezmer and lots of farts. Hip hop vocals.
6. 2:50 *****a bit uptempo and a lot groovy, with Bulgarian women’s vocals, and Pong. Cool!
7. 3:49 ****yikes! Screaming sound collage intro, then uptempo electronics and brass. Hard to sit still to this. Totally different from the Track 2 version. Mad!
8. 4:39 ****hyperspeed male Gypsy vocals, then lopsided oom-pah with lots of brass and something that smells a lot like Ouzo.
9. 3:36 ***starts loud, then gets subdued and bass-heavy, albeit a bit uptempo – and heavily dubbed. A still completely different version of the same track as track 2 and 7.
10. 4:46 ****big dramatic movie soundtrack bit, then electronic stomp and Gypsy strings and… Bhangra! Vocals sound like Gnawa, but nothing else does.
11. 6:48 ****farts! Farty farts! And vocal sound collage, and slippery slinky bass and stuff… Gosh! Completely different from the Track 1 version. Glitchy bits, too. And bits where the siren sings and you go mad and wander into the desert… Fades to chimes.
12. 4:04 *****vocal intro, then lopsided mad beat and vocal chorus – Arabic dancehall? Hard to describe, just super groovy.
