Bill Frisell-“Disfarmer” NO FCC Violations (reviewed by “Uncle Steve”)
Bill Frisell is well-known and prolific jazz guitarist. However, “Disfarmer” is collection of instrumental-only songs that have a strong Americana/roots feel. The instrumentation is traditional country (violin, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, acoustic/electric guitars, bass), along with occasional guitar licks & chords that have a jazz or blues tone, more in keeping with Bill Frisell’s body of work. Most of the songs are down-tempo/mid-tempo.
Overall: I’m no roots/Americana/Bluegrass/Country person, but I found the performances to be very competent & the production is first-rate. For my taste, there’s too much pedal steel guitar on many of the tracks (as a little goes a long way).
Recommended Tracks: 7 (“That’s Alright, Mama”-made famous by Elvis), 10 (interesting, very fast background guitar licks), 11/12 (“Lovesick Blues” & “I Can’t Help It”-made famous by Hank Williams), 16 (interesting interplay among the instruments), 20 (very short, nice guitar interplay).
