Imelda May – Love Tattoo
Reviewed by Sadie O., 10/10/09
Swing/rockabilly/lounge/Americana from a stylish Irish singer with a tight band. Crosses quite a range of “retro” styles and does them all really well.
No FCCs detected. All songs really well done – I like 1, 3, 5, and esp. 9.
1. 3:01 ***slap bass intro, uptempo bopper, sultry delivery. Simple but effective musicianship.
2. 3:00 **sweetly syncopated sashay with prominent piano, jazzy with lots of swing.
3. 5:30 ***pretty solo singing intro, very low and slow jazz love song – think Eartha Kitt. Slinky as all get-out.
4. 3:17 **midtempo bopper. Sassy rendition of a Beale St. classic.
5. 2:46 ***fine midtempo jelly roll. Sweet!
6. 2:58 **uptempo no-holds-barred rockabilly.
7. 2:49 *downbeat lounge groove – extremely smoky. Think Sarah Vaughn.
8. 2:39 **uptempo running bass swing – goes from minimal to full-on rocking.
9. 2:45 ****high-energy Texas two-step with a bad attitude – top stuff!
10. 4:09 *slow piano-based ghost town waltz. Sweet love song.
11. 3:14 **midtempo sashay – another fine remake of a classic.
12. 3:42 *slow piano intro belies an energetic uptempo rocker with mariachi horns.
