ALEX JENKINS SOUND IMMERSION: Generosity
Prescott, 2009
AVANT-GARDE – Cool, percussion-led quartet from Sacramento. Two multi-reed players create an open, angular melodic space that sounds great against the strong drum grooves and meaty bass lines. It’s lots of fun: fans of “out” and “normal” jazz will both find things to like in this strong outing. Try pairing it with Plunge or the Fully Celebrated.
Alex Jenkins - drums, percussion
Randy Mckean - alto sax, clarinets, banjo
Tony Passerell - tenor & soprano saxes, flute
Mike Turgeon - bass
* * * * | All pretty good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 5
1. 5:23 – goofy bounce, oblique yet catchy; twisty saxes take it out to play
2. 7:12 – dragging tempo; sax solos meander over a very heavy groove
3. 7:53 – perky riffs: propulsive, spiky, then chugging; everyone goes all out
4. 5:08 – cute descending theme, melts, then percolating riff & pounding beat
5. 4:27 – oblique drag leads into knotty horn work, smooth tempo shifts
6. 2:45 – formless, atmospheric: surges and ebbs with flute & banjo
7. 7:07 – free intro, then a slinky, ambling shuffle; mixes humor and mystery
