FAY VICTOR ENSEMBLE: The Freesong Suite
Greene Avenue, 2009
AVANT-GARDE VOCALS – These song/story suites are extrapolated outward from the Betty Carter school (Victor’s voice also bears a strong similarity to Carter’s). The performances are highly improvisational, with a “stream of consciousness” style: meandering along through minimalist atmospheres with psychedelic rock flares, drifting into each other, with elusive, poetic lyrics. FCC-clean.
Fay Victor - voice
Anders Nilsson - guitar
Ken Filiano - bass
Michael T.A. Thompson - drums
* * * * | All interesting. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9
1. 3:48 – a cappella, slow and winding, lots of space
2. 5:03 – atmosphere: breath and bass; then creeps through a dank maze
3. 9:15 – vocal soars over exotic backing, switches to rock stomp!, drifts back
4. 5:50 – sort of a ballad, medium tempo, with guitar giving it a country sway
5. 7:09 – guitar intro, conversational style; picks up to a rollicking pace
6. 6:37 – free jazz scribbling, scary possessed vocals; unsettling story at end
7. 5:23 – raucous, slouching, bristles with agitated energy, suppressed anger
8. 4:15 – skittering drums, stuttering vocals; a tale of Africa; freeform scatting
9. 8:39 – quiet bass intro; stretched out vocal, calm guitar solo
10. 3:55 – quiet bass & guitar reprise track 9 melody
