Abstract improvised music with traces of free jazz in some tracks. No electronics, but could appeal to fans of strange, noisy stuff.
It's a retrospective of drummer Jeff Arnal's various groups over the past 10 years, but there are common threads: nearly all-acoustic instrumentation, and some jazzy wisps from sax and piano (or, outright free-jazz aggression as on 1 and 4.)
- Free-jazz attack. Lotta drums, wailing tenor sax.
- Rattly drums and spare bass clarinet spatters
- Sporadic, squawky. Echoey lo-fi.
- Stern, slow piano. Gets loud and stormy
- Rapid patter of small, curly sounds. Active yet low-key
- Saxophone squawks. Pecking, abstract.
- High, surreal squeak.
- Mid/fast, lonely free jazz: Cooking sax/drums, crystalline piano. Great late-night bustling feel.
- Dark and ritualistic sax/bass. Gets intense, a nice 15-minute journey
- Small piano, metallic percussion
- Chamber piano, slightly off. Really short.
- Languid: loping, twangy bass, then calm jazz guitar.
- Peppery piano and bass. A nicely dense, short track.
- Otherworldly rattles and low, low trombone notes
- Scattery skewed-jazz piano/sax
- Gentle drone
