(reviewed by “Uncle Steve”, 11/21/2009)
Bill is a Bay Area native, with a long history leading “The Sons of Champlin” + 2 ½ decades with “Chicago”. This is very slickly produced, with a lot of vocal harmonies (many falsettos). It has tight instrumental performances from a group of frequently heard studio musicians. The first couple of cuts have a “Dr. John meets Stax” feel, lots of organ & piano stabs, with New Orleans/Memphis funk (yet still with an 80s production feel). Other tracks sound a lot like 80’s era “Chicago”, sans horns.
Overall: Good performances, but rather pedestrian for a College Radio Station.
Recommended Tracks: 2 (funky, bluesy), 12 (mid-tempo, funky, lyrics make fun of Hollywood types).
