Sludgy, heavy, messy music, somewhere in the intersection of punk and hardcore. Simple, slow and repetitive, bass and percussion driven with squeaky guitar fillings and screamed out, rather than sung, vocals. This music is not meant to be liked by others. It's meant to annoy you, but in fact it sounds great to me... Lyrics mostly carry moral messages about how to deal in a punk way with this weird and fucked up life. Flipper were one of those bands that influenced many many others (Nirvana, the Melvins, and the whole grunge scene are obvious examples) but never really made it big themselves. This is their first album since 1993 and the album lineup features Krist Novoselic from Nirvana (though he left shortly after they recorded this). Good stuff! For fans of: the Melvins, Nirvana (esp Bleach era), Black Flag, the Stooges.
Picks: 10,2,5,8 *** FCCs: 3 ***
1. pretty high energy opener for the Flippers, kind Stooges like
*2. nice cyclical bass melody, goes well with the spoken style vocals.
3. FCC "fucking" @-4:23 and @-2:15, starts almost quiet, bass enters and goes into this sludge jam
4. typical Flipper... noisy, messy
*5. more rocking! i like the lyrics criticizing TV and the media
6. kind of repetitive garage rock... nice stuff
7. same deal: slow but also kind of rocking... he sings more here than in the other tracks. again sounds like a track from Generic...
*8. kind of bluesy in its sludginess... starts slow and picks up into this cyclical messiness
9. sounds pretty grungy, nice bass
**10. nice! very Generic sounding, if you like the Melvins this is for you. slow and doomy, gory lyrics, echo in the vocals, cool...
