EDDIE ALLEN: Jazzy Brass for the Holidays
DBCD, 2009
CHRISTMAS –Sounding like the hippest Salvation Army band in town, this sextet plays instrumental, jazzed-up carols, often with a straight brass-band intro leading into appealing horn solos. If Xmas songs don’t make you gag on principle, these renditions are really nice.
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12
1. 3:50 – happy intro, relaxed melody, lazy trombone & warm trumpet
2. 3:57 – warm, easygoing shuffle: lovely start, but solos lack spark
3. 2:27 – sneaky little groove spices this one up a bit
4. 3:29 – surprise! slips into a fun, percolating beat with goofy horns
5. 2:51 – slides into a slow New Orleans march, great “dirty” trumpet
6. 2:04 – “Jingle Bells”: slightly drunken intro, then upbeat ‘n’ perky
7. 2:06 – “Frosty the Snowman” glides along merrily
8. 3:54 – nifty waltzing arrangement here; nice use of the horn ensemble
9. 1:36 – bright and bouncy with a good groove; just a little taste
10. 4:19 – retro-hip stroll, a little more solo room than the other tracks
11. 4:00 – cool pulse, riffing horn backing, nice muted trumpet
12. 3:42 – cool bluesy groove, bounces on a happy pulse
13. 3:59 – who knew the little drummer boy was so funky?
14. 3:19 – French horn out in front of a slinky groove
