Don Tiki – South of the Boudoir
Reviewed by Sadie O., 12/11/09
Sleazy, cheesy lounge – but REALLY well done. Lots of musicians and vocalists, some quite unusual instruments, but basically just super-über-tiki-lounge. Mostly Pacific Rim sorts of aromas, and lots of oily sexiness. Neet!
FCC – lots of talk about sex on track 15. I like 4, 6, 7 best.
1. 3:04 **tweet and rain intro, swingy bass and harp, unctuous female vocals, tiki lounge at its finest.
2. 4:33 ***bongos – and a lot of more exotic percussion – very slinky, lush, low-key instrumental. Goes uptempo for last minute.
3. 4:01 **uptempo percussion with slow, lazy vibes, instrumental.
4. 3:21 ****ba-doo-ba-doo-ba-bop! Very 60’s googie feel, midtempo relaxed with terrific nonsense vocal harmonies.
5. 3:31 ***big piano arpeggio, then overwrought goofy female vocals. I can see this becoming a HUGE drag hit… Sleazy midtempo cha cha starts after well over a minute of overwroughtness.
6. 4:00 ****bongos and strange chimes – midtempo and extremely exoticalicious.
7. 5:31 ****faint pinging, then slow funky bass strut with very sleazy male vocals. There’s some sort of glooglespiel solo or something, too.
8. 3:41 ***chimes and oily male vocals, sexy downtempo cha cha. Whee!
9. 3:04 ***very slow, very low, very come hither…
10. 4:55 **jungle mambo-a-hula baby. We’ll, I WOULD mambo, but I seem to be stuck in this hammock… Maybe it was all those mai-tais…
11. 5:11 ***midtempo 60’s lounge rock, big chorus with goofy lyrics.
12. 4:21 **slinky uptempo swing instrumental with lots of flute and vibes.
13. 2:24 ***Indian street noises for 18 seconds, then very downtempo and dreamy mambo, male vocals. A bit druggy – something in that incense, maybe…
14. 4:07 **uptempo, sort of latin ska almost, male vocals, cheese factor through the roof.
15. 9:03 FCC – rather dicey, all about sex, at least one quite graphic bit. *low burbling intro for 30 seconds – likely to not come through well driving down 280… Gradually goes into very slow, dreamy whooshy thing with bubbles, spoken word….
16. 6:02 ***scritches and things intro, nice slow funk groove starts after around 17 seconds, very similar to the track 7 version with with long random outro with exotic instruments.
