NYNDK: The Hunting of the Snark
Jazzheads, 2009
POSTMODERN JAZZ – This innovative group representing New York, Norway and Denmark (hence the name) takes on the task of reinterpreting modern classical works from each country in a jazz context, and then attempting to fuse the compositional styles of each selected composer with their own improvisational sensibilities. The results aren’t nearly as academic than that description indicates: this is exciting, modern music that has been thoroughly chewed and digested.
Ole Mathisen - saxophones, clarinet
Chris Washburne - trombone
Soren Moller - piano
Per Mathisen - bass
Tony Moreno - drums
* * * * | All good! Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 9, 10, 13
1. 2:48 – Charles Ives: oblique stride; trombone & sax slide energetically
2. 3:36 – Ives: difficult, slippery terrain, no firm footing; sounds group improv
3. 3:06 – Ives: slow, thick atmosphere, moves with a steady, dreamlike tread
4. 0:34 – buzzing improvisational interlude
5. 7:28 – Arne Nordheim: suspenseful start, strong, jazz grooves, slow ending
6. 2:02 – very slow and open: horns call to each other across an icy distance
7. 4:33 – Edvard Grieg: straightforward classical-jazz sound; all elegant curves
8. 1:34 – high-speed sax buzz over zippy bass; trombone joins the party
9. 4:13 – George Perle: uptempo hopping, lots of perky energy all around
10. 3:05 – slow, moody bass/trombone dialogue; sax drifts in
11. 4:36 – Carl Nielsen: gentle breeze with a firm, serious undertone
12. 1:46 – bright phrases bounce off each other, like a juggling act
13. 5:56 – Per Nørgård: bright and propulsive with hot, jamming solos
14. 1:19 – squealing horn interplay over steady bass, dies out
