BIRÉLI LAGRÈNE: Gipsy Trio
Dreyfus, 2009
GYPSY JAZZ – With the centennial of Django Reinhardt’s birth just around the corner, the great French guitarist Biréli Lagrène returns once again to the dynamic, chunky hot-swing style Django pioneered in the 1930s and ‘40s. Lagrène has played in many styles over the years, but he handles this stuff better than anybody. He’s working here in a trio with rhythm guitar and standup bass, which puts his mind-bogglingly brilliant guitar front and center. Some interesting tune choices, too.
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 9, 11, 13
1. easy sway, jaw-dropping solo
2. upbeat, snappy swing; flying fun!
3. relaxed ballad, then a happy glide
4. cool intro, bass solo, nice guitar!
5. sultry ballad, sweet & beautiful
6. waltz intro, then driving swing
7. gentle solo guitar balladry
8. beatles tune, saunters and sways
9. swift, breezy flow in ¾ time
10. relaxed, satisfied feel-good stroll
11. slides into a bouncy swing romp
12. gentle sway, soft and romantic
13. jumping, chugs like a dynamo
14. vocals push this into pure kitsch
