STEVE LAMBERT: May
Planet Arts, 2009
MODERN BOP – Here’s a tasty set, straight up and jaunty, crisply rendered but avoiding the antiseptic perfection that mars so many discs. Lambert’s tunes have a welcoming air and his sextet has a good time with them. His horn work is direct, but with a sour wavering quality that sounds joyous on the fast numbers and vulnerable on slower tunes.
* * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 8
1. 4:45 – snappy swing with a catchy theme; short, direct solos from all
2. 6:36 – relaxed sway: breezy sax & flugelhorn, dancing piano, bass murmurs
3. 7:01 – upbeat and snazzy hardbop with a happy latin touch; a fun romp
4. 5:44 – standard ballad, has an insouciant “after the ball” air
5. 5:45 – catchy midtempo glide, warm old-school vibe; hummable melody
6. 5:21 – happy standard played in a classic hardbop style
7. 7:43 – mixes a romantic dance and a jaunty stroll into a light, dizzy breeze
8. 5:21 – easygoing ballad, tender and thoughtful but not sappy
9. 7:39 – “Mack the Knife” played with a sly wink; solos abandon the melody
