MYRA MELFORD’S BE BREAD: The Whole Tree Gone
Firehouse 12, 2010
AVANT/MODERN JAZZ – Pianist Melford returns to her wide-ranging (and talent-loaded) Be Bread sextet with this idiosyncratic yet highly accessible collection, far from mainstream but not alien at all. Most of these pieces have already been in the group’s repertoire for a few years, so what we have here is the sound of mature assurance rather than the sparking creation of musicians working out new tunes.
* * * * | All tracks good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8
1. 6:29 – warm, upbeat straight jazz: clarinet spins; piano is calm, then spirited
2. 11:02 – excellent piano intro, enigmatic tune rolls, scatters into broad emptiness & tinkly sounds; trumpet restores direction & drifts “out”
3. 8:41 – calm, soft: creeps steadily forward; rises as piano takes flight
4. 8:39 – spins lazily under trumpet; piano/clarinet duet heats up, good guitar
5. 8:34 – spacious intro; glacial movement: heavy bass, clarinet & piano
6. 6:14 – alert pace: strides forward, then everyone on separate parallel paths
7. 7:28 – chugs calmly along, almost bluesy… becomes nagging, but relaxes
8. 8:20 – bass clarinet sets up oddball strut; guitar spangs, piano digs in!
