SHERMAN IRBY QUARTET: Live at the Otto Club
Black Warrior, 2010
MODERN BOP – Irby, a soulful and dexterous alto saxophonist in the Cannonball Adderley mold, shows both chops and taste in this set of modern-jazz standards, recorded live at a club in Naples, Italy. No surprises here, just straight up jazz.

1. 09:48 – bebop stroll: starts mild; sax picks up some steam, piano glides
2. 11:12 – upbeat, swinging groove: sinuous sax, happy piano, hard drums
3. 14:10 – romantic ballad, takes its own sweet time; languid, lyrical solos
4. 06:13 – ambitious expansion of a famous Coltrane solo, fast & breathless
5. 11:04 – Miles Davis tune played as a surprisingly slow ballad
6. 09:09 – perky T. Monk swinger; solos for everyone, good sax/drum dialogue
