ROVA + NELS CLINE SINGERS: The Celestial Septet
New World, 2010
AVANT-GARDE – Two of the leading bands of the west coast avant-garde join forces for a masterful excursion, not super far-out but very cerebral and challenging. The group sounds merge excellently: as you might expect, Cline thrills while the Rova gang intrigues and rhythm section kicks ass in the background. Very solid stuff; recommended.
* * * * * | All tracks excellent!
1. 12:45 – mystical calm: a slow, moaning melody evolves very gradually… becomes more abstract in second half, slowly blooming and dying
2. 12:25 – oddball popping theme; scrappy sax banter over strange backdrop; tweaked-out electronic/guitar solo gets spazzy
3. 25:23 – spacious intro; becomes warm & optimistic; guitar solo twists, gets dense & piercing; complex ensemble play; ~13:00 saxes all go nuts; group squeals, then long bass solo; gentle improv up to final surge
4. 02:26 – strange, happy sort of march; Cline totally wigs out on top
5. 15:59 – very slow, mysterious, ominous… high, eerie sax tones; becomes wide open with gloopy electronics; in second half, sudden bursts of high-speed free jazz alternate with quieter improv interplay
