Catchy, jangly pop debut EP from this Chicago trio. Their promo calls them “shoegaze”, but the first two songs in particular are a bit more rockin’ than your typical shoegaze band.
FCCs: 6. Try: 2,5.
*=liked, **=loved
1. 3:40 midtempo, guitars that are sometimes light/happy/jangly and at others big and rockin. Male vox recall The Shins and Silversun, but more “masculine” than Silversun. Guitar solos get a bit long in the tooth at points.
2.** 4:18 upbeat. guitars are jangly/happy during verses, rock out during chorus. more laid back Silversun-esque vocals. nice rhythm - my head was nodding. interesting broken-up chord progression during “bridge”.
3. 5:07 slow and “artsy”. about 1:15 of elec guitar distortion leads into fast picking and a slow, distorted guitar melody. somewhat plodding. i was waiting for this one to be over.
4. 5:16 pretty typical 90s alt-rock. faster than #3, but still plodding. big, “wall-of-sound” guitar.
5.* 4:31 slow, but pleasant. guitar is restrained, basic, clear; wistful classic-rock influenced solos get jammy but still pleasing. angsty lyrics - Oasis?
6.** FCC 5:06 first 30 secs are moody a la Mazzy Star, then moves upbeat. Slow/moody again from ~3:00 to 4:00. Yes, they are going for epic here. Big guitars are catchy and somewhat danceable. FCC: “I had one thing that wouldn’t fuck me over”. Really too bad, because this is a solid close to the EP.
