Afrobeat-funk. Parisian artist Bibi Tanga, an immigrant from the Central African Republic, creates a groove-heavy funk album infused with amiable raps in English, French and Sango lyrics. It’s hard to go wrong with any track if you’re in the mood for a steady groove. Think a cross between Fela Kuti, Jamiroquai and a slower Gnarls Barkley.
My picks: 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12
1) Slow. (5:29) Beat-heavy track with melody from “Gangster’s Paradise”; smooth vocal overlay.
2) Slow- Mid. (4:02) Loopy strings and poppy sounds simulate an upbeat and dreamy intoxication off of red wine.
3) *Mid. (4:46) Great scatting over a repetitive funky rhythm, jazzy saxophone.
4) *Mid. (5:32) A Curtis Mayfield–like intro into soul-fused African beats, lyrics in Sango.
5) *Slow-mid. (4:21) Almost indistinguishable from Fela Kuti, lyrics in Sango. Call and response with female chorus.
6) Slow-mid. (2:51) Acoustic guitar and vocals give a folky vibe with social message.
7) *Slow-mid. (5:57) Smooth bass pattern, psychedelic progression, beautiful female vocals & harmonies in second half of song.
8) **Fast-mid. (4:15) Dance rhythm underscores Sango chants “Be Africa” & funky guitar.
9) Slow-mid. (4:02) Electric-soulful with great bass line.
10) Slow-mid. (3:10) A darker jazz groove with short vocal samples in French.
11) Slow-mid. (4:52) More of an R&B groove, rainy-day piano and strings.
12) **Mid. (3:28) Super-funk with fun lyrics and vocal flairs.
