Peter Case – Wig!
Reviewed by Sadie O., 8/5/10
Great, swampy, bluesy alt-Americana. Fine, understated playing and lyrics, and the stink of reality. It’s stuff like this that makes it possible to get up in the morning. Everything’s either great or fucking awesome.
1. 5:08 ***fuzzy, lo-fi, downtempo barrelhouse piano, bluesy harp, builds energy and drama until last 45 seconds or so.
2. 4:47 ****bluesy guitar intro, then rollicking 4/4 stomp with a tinge of punk. Killer.
3. 3:19 ****roadhouse shuffle – you can do the Texas two-step, or bop, or pogo – up to you, baby.
4. 3:37 ****swamp rock with a bit of reverb. Gnarly.
5. 3:31 ***piano boogie stomp with a lot of swing and a soupçon of menace.
6. 2:49 ***downbeat country blues shuffle. Sounds like one of them National metal-front guitars. Nice.
7. 3:51 ****fat electric guitar and piano boogie.
8. 4:25 ***live performance sound, slow and disturbed blues with piano and slide. Nice, creepy slide.
9. 4:25 ****reverby crawl with swell piano and syncopated beat. Gets all upside your backbone and scratches.
10. 3:32 ***electric 60’s rock with the ghost-of-Lou-Reed’s blessing.
11. 3:25 ****upbeat live swamp boogie. One-note guitar solo!
12. 3:32 ****beautiful acoustic steel guitar folk blues version of track 3. You can make out every goddamn disturbing word. Wow. WOW.
