The Rebel Set – Poison Arrow
Reviewed by Sadie O., 9/9/10
Surf-punk-garage-bit o’ psych, from Dayton Ohio. Drumming that seems mostly tamborine, surfer stomp guitar, adenoidal and mostly incomprehensible vocals, punk attitude. All very similar sounding, but it’s a good sound.
I couldn’t make out any FCCs – but I couldn’t make out much of anything…
1. 1:42 **upbeat, driving surfer stomp instrumental, prominent guitar & tamborine.
2. 3:14 **classic surf drum ‘n’ bass. Rather reedy vocals, but lots o’ twang.
3. 2:15 ***total rave-up surf-punk.
4. 2:14 ***more of the same – and there is NOTHING wrong with rave-up surf-punk.
5. 3:36 ***weebly theramin intro, then hyperspeed psych-surf with lots of whammy bar. The epic of the album…
6. 2:28 **rather moody and closer to mid-tempo, angst-ridden.
7. 1:18 **total louder-faster-shorter.
8. 3:02 **rather slower and swingier, more garage than surf or punk.
9. 2:36 **rave-up surf-punk.
10. 2:20 ***surfer stomp.
11. 2:18 **closer to mid-tempo, garage rock, tough sounding. Fades to rather distant echo midway through and comes back.
12. 2:47 ***upbeat and very punky with emphatic triplets at the end of each line. Not the same song as Dr. Demento used to play…
13. 1:26 ***fast punkabilly.
14. 3:12 ***surfer stomp, whammy bar, lots of go-go feel.
