EITHER/ORCHESTRA: Mood Music for Time Travelers
Accurate, 2010
MODERN BIG BAND – This oddball ensemble out of Boston always puts an interesting twist on mainstream jazz. After detouring through Ethiopia for a few years, this CD gets back to home ground. Creative tunes with a Latin touch; some catchy & fun, others shifty & elusive.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6, 8
1. 5:37 – catchy, lopsided shuffle: breezy sax, quirky trumpet, staged applause
2. 6:16 – very cute Latin ballroom tune: playful baritone sax, wry trumpet solo
3. 6:02 – frictionless glide at first, then layered & ominous; lots of percussion
4. 9:42 – sneaky walk picks up reggae beat; spacious trumpet & sax solos
5. 6:27 – Latinized tune keeps things hopping: multiple flavors, dark ending
6. 8:24 – slinky Ethiopian groove with an air of mystery and big band bursts
7. 4:50 – drum time: busy percussion thing, horn accents, second half grooves
8. 7:18 – cool funky jam, shifts ground as diverse influences drift in and out
9. 10:01 – warm Caribbean tune: lazy pace, odd meter make it slightly surreal
10. 11:55 – rides a steady pulse: piano digs in, soulful sax, prodding trumpet
