FARUQ Z BEY & NORTHWOODS IMPROVISERS: Emerging Field
Entropy Stereo, 2010
AVANT-GARDE – Cool sextet with a low, dusky, exotic sound. This is in a sort of 1970s loft-scene vein, quite accessible, matching midtempo grooves with relaxed improvisation. No frantic freakouts here: this is cerebral yet head nodding (or even toe-tapping) avant-jazz.
All very good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9
1. 5:22 – mopey horns slouch into a slow, rumbling piece; good atmosphere
2. 7:54 – uptempo exotica groove: relaxed vibes & moody sax solos
3. 2:22 – atmospheric intro: low tones from bowed bass & clarinet
4. 8:41 – slow, bunny-hopping intro: solos are twisty but controlled, nice vibes
5. 7:07 – surging, oddball groove: saxes explore, poking & prodding at rhythm
6. 12:15 – Ornette Coleman tune: slooow and delicate, solos float in space
7. 9:09 – exotic dance, spins gently on an oblique axis, cerebral horn work
8. 10:58 – slow: cautious melody, low tribal beat, eloquent sax solos
9. 12:32 – free jazz: horn phrases converge around quick, spinning rhythm
