AVISHAI COHEN: Introducing Triveni
Anzic, 2010
MODERN JAZZ – This is Avishai Cohen the trumpeter, not the bassist of the same name. Cohen’s new trumpet/bass/drum trio has great openness and tight interplay for a fresh, active sound. It also puts the trumpet in the spotlight for LONG stretches; so it’s a good thing Cohen’s playing is so melodic and casual in approach. Nice work.
Avishai Cohen : trumpet
Omer Avital : bass
Nasheet Wits : drums
Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 5, 6
1. 3:45 – perky, swinging ditty: happy trumpet and drums, funky bass
2. 12:42 – a bit of tough-guy swagger; much of it is a lengthy trumpet solo
3. 7:17 – breezy bop stroll, tiny nods to the avant-garde at start & end
4. 5:01 – nice bit o’ Ellingtonia: great trumpet with plunger mute, goofy bass
5. 11:47 – Coltrane: cool drum intro; trumpet reaches for sky, then gets deep
6. 4:26 – relaxed and thoughtful: muted trumpet, beautiful rhythm work
7. 5:30 – easygoing standard, a straightforward walk
8. 6:45 – starts as funky strut; switches to uptempo roll & jab, drums take over
