ELI DEGIBRI: Israeli Song
Anzic, 2010
MODERN MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Young Israeli saxophonist Degibri leads his dream band here, and it’s a nice setting for his tenor horn style, which is easily lyrical but with a hard-edged growl that creeps in from time to time. I find his soprano more than a little harsh, though. Most of the tunes are originals; each member of the band contributes.
Eli Degibri - tenor & soprano saxophones
Brad Mehldau - piano
Ron Carter - bass
Al Foster - drums
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
1. 6:51 – flowing modernist ballad w/soprano sax; cool piano solo & drums
2. 6:27 – mellow stroll, highlights Ron Carter’s bass: easygoing round of solos
3. 5:24 – gliding bop bounce: rhythm section propels, piano twists it, sax flies
4. 5:47 – a gentle ballad, but soprano sax stomps all over it
5. 6:27 – relaxed walk, with a bluesy touch: nice solos all around, esp. bass
6. 4:25 – sax/drums duet: a bebop classic, slowed down to a breezy glide
7. 3:52 – sax/piano duet: bright, winding ballad with a chamber music feel
8. 4:19 – grooving, soulful ditty; drums in the driver’s seat, soprano sax struts
9. 4:20 – brisk waltzing flow, tricky tempo shifts: sax romps, piano tilts it a bit
10. 4:21 – sax/bass duet: they sound great together, but “Over the Rainbow”?!
11. 4:40 – sax/piano duet: a wistful, nostalgic tune; both players sound great
