THE KORA BAND: Cascades
OA2, 2010
WORLD JAZZ – Entertaining quintet out of Seattle/Portland mixes up original jazz with West African music. The band has a really inviting sound, and kora player/guitarist/vocalist Kane Mathis has chops. Feel-good music, some interesting twists. Vocals in Mandinka language.
Fo’s Picks… jazz: 2, 4, 6, 9, 11 world: 1, 5, 8, 10
1. 6:00 – happy midtempo bounce with vocal, switches beats a couple of times
2. 5:50 – catchy little midtempo groove; beautiful kora lines, lilting piano
3. 2:13 – circular, walking rhythm, kora/trumpet/piano take turns in lead
4. 5:25 – mid-uptempo, great jazzy feel on this one, cool piano & busy kora
5. 4:21 – brisk, spinning kora/piano/calabash trio with vocals, skipping piano
6. 7:22 – chugging train groove w/trumpet; slides into Zimbabwean pop vibe
7. 5:38 – relaxed & warm; guitar takes place of kora, nice piano & trumpet
8. 2:31 – cool kora/bass/calabash trio, striding rhythm; kora really digs in
9. 6:15 – original vocal tune, propulsive groove, blossoms with soaring trumpet
10. 3:25 – brisk afropop from Cameroon, danceable and fun
11. 3:05 – flowing, undulating duet: kora and piano move nicely together
12. 4:56 – a song for Guinean dictator/music lover Amadou Sekou
13. 7:08 – relaxed ditty with guitar, romantic in a goofy way, becomes a party
