NEGRONI’S TRIO: Just Three
Mojito, 2010
MODERN BOP / LATIN JAZZ – Hard-hitting stuff from the Puerto Rican father/son team of pianist José and drummer Nomar Negroni, heavy on the dazzle quotient: their jackhammer rhythmic sense jostles against sweet flights from piano and fat bass grooves. José switches off between acoustic, electric piano in the disc’s first half. Worth a spin.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 9
1. 4:04 – jabbing theme; excellent bass solo, electric piano skips over groove
2. 3:48 – rhythmic flexing, then rolling tune: piano lines unspool, great drums
3. 3:05 – hot rumba: dancing acoustic & electric piano, busy drumming
4. 6:25 – tough themes and breezy breaks, propulsive skittering rhythm
5. 4:36 – starts weepy, kicks into an uptempo waltz with lyrical solos
6. 3:01 – uptempo, bobs & weaves: piano settles it down, then thrusts forward
7. 4:46 – jumps between many moods: stabbing, sweeping, martial, romantic
8. 8:01 – solo piano is mysterious, expressive, dramatic & quite impressive
9. 8:07 – trio builds on #8: striding start, chugging piano & burning drum solo
