Diplomats of Solid Sound – What Goes Around…
Reviewed by Sadie O., 11/3/10
60’s-style soul/funk. 5th album by these gents and ladies outa Iowa City (of all places). No snarking! These guys get seriously down (and the female vocals are great). No frills or pretentions – just solid sound, just as advertised. All tracks are excellent – I just didn’t want to belabor the point with too many stars.
No FCCs detected. I like 4, 7 and 11 best.
1. 3:00 **guitar and bongos intro, then Stax-style rave-up with catchy chorus.
2. 3:59 **stuttering guitar, more bongos, cool midtempo sashay. Fine female vocals. Nice solos from horns and drums, too.
3. 3:17 **kinda jazzy uptempo soul twist, very upbeat.
4. 3:29 ***midtempo funky slide with violin (!) up front, bluesy vocals.
5. 4:34 **midtempo relaxed slinky funky groove.
6. 4:41 **Booker-T style keyboard with girls chatting about boys.
7. 3:25 ***FUNK FUNK FUNKY FUNK-TYPE FUNK. Instrumental.
8. 3:01 **bongo boogie, female chatting intro, upbeat soul-funk waddle.
9. 4:14 *a bit atmospheric and tinkly, but with a solid beat. Gets a smooth-funky groove after 40 seconds or so. Social justice lyrics.
10. 4:19 **uptempo Motown sound, sweet and tinkly.
11. 4:03 ***somewhat downtempo funky crawl.
