ERLAND AND THE CARNIVAL "TROUBLE IN MIND" -- British folk rock band from London, who have reconditioned traditional folk tunes in a contemporary fashion. Bandleader Erland Cooper researched old British songs and songwriters for two years while developing his own writing skills. He met Simon Tong, who is a multi-instrumentalist with many musical credits, and David Nock, who plays drums, percussion and keyboards. Other musicians are Andy Bruce, synthesizers, and Danny Wheeler, bass.
Best Tracks: 1, 2, 3, 4 -- Sunshine January 2011
***** 1) Trouble in Mind -- Almost sounds like airplane at the beginning. Good vocals, lyrics, upbeat lament: "I didn't mean to disappoint you, I'm just sorry that I did." I like the instruments too, which include a Zither. 4:15
**** 2) My Name Is Carnival -- Like Cream's "White Room" at start, then speeds up like some other '60s rockers. Cool guitars and bass. The band was named after this song, which was written by Jackson C. Frank. 3:01
**** 3) You Don't Have To Be Lonely -- Starts like a chase scene. Big instruments plus harmonies reminiscent of Mamas and Papas. 3:39
**** 4) Love Is A Killing Thing -- Contemporary arrangement of traditional British folk song. Slower than other tracks to start, then picks it up. Becomes rather loud and busy midway toward conclusion. 5:25
