CHARLES TYLER: Eastern Man Alone
ESP-Disk’, 1967
1960s AVANT-GARDE – Solid session with Tyler on alto sax along with cello and two basses. Tyler first emerged with Albert Ayler’s fiery band but by the time of this album (his second as a leader), he’d begun to find an earthier sound. The playing here has plenty of loose-limbed, agitated freedom, but it also clearly references blues and folk idioms.
Charles Tyler : alto sax
Dvid Baker : cello
Kent Brinkley, Brent McKesson : basses
Try any. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3
1. 12:24 – avant-bluesy bounce: acrid sax solo over loose rhythm, funky cello solo boils repeated riffs down to abrasive sawing, bass dialogue
2. 12:02 – angular theme, then sax dives in with warped energy; cello solo smoothes out Tyler’s line; cool free-bass duet goes for some time
3. 13:00 – harshly brooding intro, shifts to a sax wail as basses dig madly, then strings roam through dramatic emotion and high tension
4. 10:56 – chugging riff, dark and heavy strings under forceful sax, then they thicken into a groaning mass that slides progressively father out
