BILL O’CONNELL: Rhapsody in Blue
Challenge, 2010
MAINSTREAM/LATIN JAZZ – Pianist Bill O’Connell leads a jaunty session of mostly original tunes, joined by a rotating cast of Latin-jazz and straightahead musicians. A nice session with a light atmosphere.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 6, 8, 9
1. 6:29 – midtempo, steamy Latin groove; flowing piano & vibes, sassy sax
2. 5:55 – jabbing theme, then quick, hard-swinging rhythm for punchy solos
3. 5:11 – Gershwin classic played with a breezy Latinized swing
4. 6:16 – standard ballad, relaxed sway with soprano sax, romantic piano
5. 6:56 – sashaying 6/8 theme, easygoing swing for solos; good trombone
6. 6:03 – hot Latin romp: piano & sax whirl over hard-edged drums
7. 6:05 – shifting groove: soprano sax skips/struts, piano feints & gets bluesy
8. 5:25 – strong piano in this light, gliding tune; alto sax slips ‘n’ slides
9. 6:39 – pensive duet ballad: alto sax broods, piano flies; turns optimistic
10. 5:13 – standard gets a Latin wiggle, light banter between piano/drums
